Animal physiology is the scientific study of the life-supporting properties, functions and processes of animals or their parts. The discipline covers key homeostatic processes, such as the regulation of temperature, blood flow and hormones.
Animal physiology is the study of the internal physical and chemical functions of animals. Professionals in this field may explore the makeup of animals, including their genetics, their behaviors and their biological structure.
Scope of Animal Physiology
Animal physiology is the study of how animals’ bodies function in their environment. An understanding of the physiological problems animals face and how they solve those problems can be achieved only in an evolutionary context. Knowledge of certain aspects of the natural history, morphology, behavior, and environment of an animal is necessary to fully appreciate the importance of its physiological mechanisms.
The study of animal physiology includes topics such as: gas exchange, feeding and digestion, circulation, metabolic rate, water and solute regulation, temperature regulation, excretion of wastes, movement and the homeostatic phenomenon in animal bodies in relation with coordination organ, cell tissues functions.

Duties of an Animal Physiologist
In addition to studying and conducting experiments, animal physiologists typically have a wide variety of duties. They may develop research plans, protocols, and testing procedures. Physiologists also study reproductive cells and chromosomes. They may evaluate hormonal status and presence of abnormal changes in exfoliated or abraded cells.
Animal physiologists may assess animal metabolism and nutrition. They might evaluate animal housing to ensure that it meets optimum temperature, humidity, and space requirements for animal health. Physiologists also study and analyze animal tissue microscopically.
Career Prospects and Job Opportunities in Animal Physiology
A degree in animal physiology can lead to opportunities in a wide variety of areas, including fisheries, veterinary schools and pharmaceutical research.
