Administration, Career Opportunities and Prospects

Administration
About Administration

Administration refers to the act of directing people towards accomplishing a goal.

Scope of Administration

The definition of administration refers to the group of individuals who are in charge of creating and enforcing rules and regulations, or those in leadership positions who complete important tasks. An example of administration is the President of the United States and the individuals he appoints to support him.

Administration, also referred to as business administration, is the management of an office, business, or organisation. It involves the efficient organisation of people, information, and other resources to achieve organisational objectives.

Information is key to business operations, and people are the resources who make use of information to add value to an organisation. This means that companies will struggle without some type of administration management.

Skills and Competencies that You Need to Succeed in Administration

It is assumed that an administrator is one who (a) directs the activities of other persons and (b) undertakes the responsibility for achieving certain objectives through these efforts. Within this definition, successful administration appears to rest on three basic skills, which we will call technical, human, and conceptual.

Technical skill

As used here, technical skill implies an understanding of, and proficiency in, a specific kind of activity, particularly one involving methods, processes, procedures, or techniques.

Human skill

As used here, human skill is the executive’s ability to work effectively as a group member and to build cooperative effort within the team he leads. As technical skill is primarily concerned with working with “things” (processes or physical objects), so human skill is primarily concerned with working with people.

Conceptual skill

As used here, conceptual skill involves the ability to see the enterprise as a whole; it includes recognizing how the various functions of the organization depend on one another, and how changes in any one part affect all the others; and it extends to visualizing the relationship of the individual business to the industry, the community, and the political, social, and economic forces of the nation as a whole.

 Microsoft Office

A strong background in all Microsoft Office programs is crucial for those in administrative roles. Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook form the basis of many business communications and processes.

Communication skills

Communication is a longstanding must-have skill for those in administrative roles. All types of communication are vital for this type of professional: oral communication for meetings and phone calls, writing capability for correspondence that needs to be sent internally and externally, and strong listening skills to follow instructions.

 The ability to work autonomously

In addition to being able to show initiative, the ability to work autonomously is well regarded in roles that provide business support.

Database management

The ability to manage databases is a highly desired skill. Of course, the database of choice will depend on the programs the business uses. Employers will look for someone who is confident in their own ability and who isn’t afraid to pass this on to other staff members.
