Chief People Officer
Location: Port Harcourt Nigeria.
Role Context
Chief People Officer – this position will be responsible for all aspects of human resources leadership and support for the company in Nigeria.  As the business is on a very aggressive growth mode, the primary responsibility of the CPO is to work with the different business leaders to establish an HR delivery model that will support the country operations. The CPO will develop and maintain a high performance work environment consistent with the company vision, values and culture and provide leadership. The CPO will report to the Chief Executive Officer.
  • Initially the role will be focused on establishing the HR function and HR services including consulting, counseling, training, employee relations, general employee communications and all aspects of total rewards such as pay planning and position classification.
  • Provides guidance and direction to HR, business leaders and employees with emphasis on maintaining a high performing work environment.
  • The CPO is responsible for working with department and functional leaders across the businesses in Nigeria on organization decisions and subsequent implementation. This could involve enterprise wide projects. The CPO will challenge managers to achieve superior results on key human resources issues and productivity; acts in a consultative role to achieve these results.
  • Creates change management and communications strategy to support country/ corporate-wide organizational initiatives and manage expectations of business leaders and employees.
  • Provide leadership and direction to managers and employees on human resources policies, plans, programs, practices, processes and tools to ensure knowledge transfer, enhanced organizational capability related to the management and development of people and consistent delivery.
  • Directs and reviews audits to ensure the accuracy, integrity and efficiency of Human Resource data, applications and reports. Promotes operational efficiency, security and effectiveness of controls.
  • Partner with Compensation specialists to analyze wage and salary reports and data to determine competitive compensation.  Review market data to determine competitive wage rate.  Manage salary planning and administer compensation planning to ensure that managers are in compliance and maintain internal equity within the organization.
  • Maintains knowledge of legal requirements and government reporting regulations affecting human resources functions and ensure policies, procedures and reporting are in compliance for entire organization.  Ensures all company data is gathered and completed accurately and within compliance and filing date(s) are met.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to ensure all human resource processes including; recruiting, new hire, performance administration/reviews, separations, terminations and transfers are performed in a consistent, accurate, compliant and timely manner.
  • Partner with Talent Sourcing to ensure the identification, development and retention of top talent.
  • Implement and sustain continuously higher levels of improvement through well managed change processes.
  • Ensure that the highest standards of compliance and ethics are embedded into the organization.
  • Manage an effective succession plan for business leaders in the organization.
  • Will be required to travel extensively throughout Nigeria initially.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Proven experience in establishing an HR function within a large scale organization
  • Must be able to work across various divisions and with multiple business leaders simultaneously to effectively eliminate roadblocks and drive successful execution.
  • Proven ability to engage leaders in organization effectiveness programs and practices
  • Demonstrated ability to be a credible advocate of HR policies and practices with individuals throughout the organization, across different businesses
  • Expertise in Human Resource concepts, practices, procedures and Indian employment regulations and laws
  • Success in coaching, mentoring, and developing others.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and change management
  • Strong orientation to managing through metrics, project management and continuous improvement
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment that is fast paced and demanding
  • Ability to remain customer focused viz discuss with clients’ HR on their needs and accordingly implement people/process needs for the business.
  • Must be self-directed, have excellent initiative and organizational skills
  • Able to handle multiple demands with a sense of urgency, drive and energy
  • Works well under stress with the ability to deliver on time
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven track record in talent sourcing, analytical thinking and organizational development.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and objectives while maintaining a high level of output
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint
Education & experience
Required Education / Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent
  • 15 years of  progressively challenging Human Resource Generalist experience
  • 5 years of Human Resource experience with a large scaled-up business.
Preferred Education / Experience
  • Multi-cultural acumen or experience in a global multi-site environment
  • Experienced with Microsoft suite of products along with Lotus Notes Email & Calendar systems
  • Experience of working in an SAP environment
  • Advanced learning degree such as an MBA or other HR certifications
